Paul and Betty Pink borrowed fifty dollars from her mother in 1939, bought a pushcart, and started selling chili dogs near La Brea and Melrose; their children run the stand that grew on the same corner. The chili recipe has not changed, the walls are papered with celebrity photographs, and the menu now names dogs after the people who ate them, from the Martha Stewart to the Brando. The queue after midnight on a Friday is a genuine cross-section of Los Angeles, which is more than most of the city manages.
