Bombay Beach sits roughly 223 feet below sea level on the Salton Sea, a resort town that died when the water turned saline and the fish began washing ashore. A few hundred people stayed. The Ski Inn is their bar, papered wall to ceiling in signed dollar bills. The patty melt is fine rather than good, and that kind of honesty is part of why the drive is worth making.
