Prefabricated stainless diners were built in New Jersey and shipped by rail to whoever had bought one, which is how a 1948 dining car came to sit a short walk from the Bainbridge ferry dock. Inside it does exactly what the form was designed for: griddle work, counter seats, breakfast that does not stop at eleven. The corn pancakes, with bacon cooked into the batter, are worth the crossing on their own.
