Opened in 1974 under a pressed-tin ceiling, the Maple Leaf is where Uptown goes when a brass band is the only acceptable answer. Rebirth Brass Band has held the Tuesday night slot for more than thirty years, loud enough to move the back patio, and the Sunday afternoon poetry reading that Everette Maddox started in 1979 is the longest running in the South. Maddox's ashes are in the courtyard, which is about as New Orleans as a bar gets.
