Frank Duarte, a Portuguese immigrant, opened a bar on this Pescadero corner in 1894, and his family has held the room ever since, now into a fourth generation. The cream of artichoke soup uses the crop growing in the fields outside and the olallieberry pie uses the berries, which is the entire argument for driving to the coast rather than eating an imitation in the city. A James Beard America’s Classics award in 2003 only confirmed what the coast already knew.
