Marisol Hernandez grew up in San Rafael half Puerto Rican and largely disconnected from it, until she spent nine months on the island at twenty and came home cooking. Sol Food started as a farmers market stall, moved into a twelve-seat room around 2000, and has since taken over a decent chunk of downtown San Rafael without diluting the recipes: garlic in everything, plantains fried twice. Pollo al horno with tostones is the plate to order first.
