La Merced was built in 1957 on the site of a 16th-century convent, on ground where Aztec traders once ran a tianguis that Hernán Cortés reportedly called the largest market in the world. It now sprawls across several city blocks and dozens of interlinked buildings, serving as one of Mexico's largest wholesale and retail food markets. Visitors who only know the tourist markets of Coyoacán or San Juan will be genuinely disoriented here: bulk dried chiles in 50-kilo sacks, entire stalls dedicated to mole pastes, vendors who've sold the same herb for forty years.
