Tamearra Dyson left a healthcare career and opened Souley Vegan in West Oakland in 2009 with a specific aim: get plant-based cooking into Black kitchens on its own terms rather than as a substitute for something else. Everything is made in house, sauces and proteins and the cashew-cream mac and cheese included, with produce from the Black-owned Acta Non Verba farm. After the original room closed she reopened in Jack London Square in 2025.
